When cleaning air ducts in Des Moines, Ames, Ankeny or any other central Iowa city for that matter, we occasionally encounter very expensive houses that have challenges that make us stop and shake our heads. This article covers things to consider when hiring a professional air duct cleaning service.
Accessing HVAC Trunk Lines
One of the biggest challenges we face is when we can’t access the trunk lines or the individual vents.
In this picture, you can see a major return trunk line running pretty much the length of the basement. Now look at all the clutter preventing us from accessing it! We had to spend half an hour just moving stuff to make a trail so we could get our equipment in, and then another 15 minutes moving stuff so we could access the trunk lines. That’s time we could have spent cleaning ducts instead.
We also find individual floor vents that are covered with items that we have to move in order to clean. We don’t mind moving some things but when talking with customers, I always tell them that we need access to all vents and the furnace and trunk lines.
We would rather you move your belongings yourself, because if we break something then we have to pay for it! Please protect your valuables by moving them enough to provide access to each vent throughout the house.
Trunk Lines Used For Electrical / Plumbing
Another challenge we run into is when contractors use the trunk lines for electrical and plumbing runways. They run their wire or plumbing through the trunks which makes it harder for us to clean. Our whips get caught up on the wires or pipes, and then we have to break the whips off and put new ones on. It also is harder to push debris past the wires or pipes.
It may not be against code in Des Moines, Ames or Ankeny when it comes to running wires or plumbing, but it doesn’t seem like a good idea to use the HVAC trunk lines for that purpose – especially when you are spending $500,000 on a house! But even though we see this occasionally, we still manage to get the job done and get the line cleaned. That is one of the values of taking before and after pictures, which we do on every job. You’ll be able to see for yourself that the job was done right.
